Cooking to Stay Warm: Oven Baked Beef Stew

Do you love to cook on cool days?  Days in which you are indoors with lots to do really but you love to cook?  I do.  I thought I would share this with you maybe it will warm you on these cold days.

Browning Lean Stew Beef.
Use lots of paprika for added flavor as well as color.

Placing into baking dish.  I love this baking dish, it makes everything taste so great. It is a red covered Le Creuset and everything that is cooked in it is delicious!

Sauteed the chopped onion & garlic

Placing in pan on top of beef

Making the roux or gravy

Add flour I use self rising a tablespoon at a time stirring blending into the small amount of oil you have browned the beef in.  When you have it fairly thick yet fluid enough as you can see in the pan. Stir until lightly browned.  Add 2 - 4 cups of very hot water carefully stirring it in to prevent lumps cooking at medium high heat. You will want this mixture to be very very thin so add enough water to make it that way.  It will thicken with time in the oven.

Pouring thin gravy into baking pan on top of beef

Adding the vegetables after cooking beef and gravy for an hour.

Bake until beef is fork tender and vegetables are tender but not mushy soft. Remove from oven
Out of the oven with thickened gravy, beautifully browned tender, delicious and oh so flavorful!

Can't you just taste it?

Stay Warm!

  4. Ooh delicious, Dolly, and a great idea to keep warm as well. I love double-duty things like this where you get more than great result. We are not too cold here in England, it is just very wet, but we have heard that it is fiercely wintery in the US so we are thinking of you.
    Best wishes from the UK!

  5. Soup is the best option for cold days. Our favorite is a creamy potato chowder in the crockpot. Thick and filling. But your recipe looks awesome to use up some of the venison in the freezer. Thanks! Stevie @ ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com
